Carrots

These are my carrots - or rather I hope they are. Never having grown carrots before I'm not sure what they're supposed to look like! I'm hoping that the small round-leaved weedy looking things that I pulled out from in between these shoots were in fact weeds, and not the other way around...

And while I'm on the subject of carrots, I keep reading that I'm supposed to 'thin' them... what on earth (no pun intended) does this mean? Does it mean that I have to dig them up and replant them a bit more spread out? And how do I know when to do it? Wont I kill them?! Help!

  1. Hello!

    Those are carrots.

As your carrots get bigger they will become crowded, so you need to keep taking some out to give the other ones more space to grow, this is called 'thinning'.

If you don't do it you probably won't get any at all, and your weeding will have been in vain, as instead of being smothered by weeds they'll be smothered by each other. When you get really good at sowing the seed (or maybe you already have the gift!, I don't) you'll find you do less thinning as you won't have put too many in in the first place.

There will be some waste, but later on when they are big enough you can eat the thinnings as baby carrots :o)

  2. Thanks Fi! So does that mean that I have to throw away the ones that I take out or do I plant them somewhere else? x
